-2 •
The spacing of the trees will vary from 10 to 20 feet depending on if they
are to be used for windbreak planting or spot planting. The shrubs can be
grouped as close as 4 feet apart for a dense planting. Space according to
use. The time of planting will vary. If bare root stock is used plant
early in the spring. Potted stock can be planted most any time the weather
permits.
Grass
The grasses adapted for this site and amounts to be applied are listed in
the following table.
Cormnon Name
Botanical Name
LBS. of P.L.S. per acre
. ~s
V,~ Alkali Sacaton Sporobolus airoides 6.5
Switchgrass Panicum virgatum 2.5
+ Western Wheatgrass Agropyron smithii 8.0
Slender Wheatgrass 9gropyron trachycaulum 9.0
Tall Fescue Festuca arundinacea 4.0
Tall Wheatgrass Agropyron elongatum 6.0
Smooth Brome Bromus inermis 6.5
Inland Saltgrass (sprigs planting in high use area - seed not available)
Check for best variety at time of seeding.
The rate of P.L.S. (pure live seed) listed is the recommended seeding rate
in pounds per acre if drilled alone. If broadcasted, the rate needs to be
doubled. In a mixture, use a direct percent of each seed to be used.
Example:
Mix Drilled Rate
Western Wheatgrass - 50% X 8.0 = 4.0 lbs. of P.L.S./Acre
Tall Wheatgrass - 30% X 6.0 = 1.8 lbs. of P.L.S./Acre
Switchgrass - 20% X 2.5 = 0.5 lbs. of P.L.S./Acre
The best time to seed would be early spring prior to April 1st. A late
summer seeding between August 20th and September 15th could also be made.
A mixture is recommended due to the various depths of the water table and
the salinity of the soil.
n re Yours // ,, /
~~ X~c~i~y~~~~Cl
F.
