cable 7-17 indicates water quality in the Vadge underburden is variable. Yell YYU28 has •
exhibited four water types, varying seasonally es calcium in the spring yields to
magnesium during summer end fell end to sodium in winter. Bicarbonate in the spring and
summer yields to sulfate as fell progresses into winter. eiterbonete is the dominant
anion et Vell YVU29 and both calcium and magnesium exert almost equal influence during ell
seasons. VeLI YVU30 predominantly exhibits a MBCeHC03504 water type, with sodium exerting
some influence during the summer.
Total dissolved solids in both YYU28 end YVU30 commonly exceed 7000 mg/l, ranging between
996 end 7550 mg/l and between 1198 end 1406 mg/l, respectively. TDS et Yell YVU29 has
ranged much lower, from 388 up to only 716 mg/l. Sulfate et ell three wells has not
exceeded 700 mgl, ranging more than 300 mg/t at YYU28 (366 to 696 mg/I). Yell YVU29
exhibited one of the lowest ranges of sulfate toncentretions for all monitoring wells at
the Yoast mining area, ranging from only 14 mg/l to 777 mg/l. Both sulfate end TDS in [he
Madge underburden show only slight seasonal variability, generally lowest in the spring,
gradually increasing es summer progresses into fall.
Field pH measurements have also varied among [he Madge underburden wells, mostly above 7.0 •
S.U. (slightly alkaline). Vell YVU29 has had one field pH value below 7.0 (6.9 - 6/93),
and et VeLI YYU30, three values less than 7.0 (6/92 through 6/93) have been measured. No
distinct seesone( pattern is evident for pH in the Vadge underburden.
Hardness as CaC03 measured at both YVU28 end YYU30 has exceeded 1000 mg/l (1128 mg/l and
1082 mg/1, respectively). Hardness has ranged much (over et TVU29 (338 to 503 mg/l ), yet
ground water in the Yedge underburden is considered very hard.
Several trace elements have been measured at detectable concentrations in the Vadge
underburden, including Be, B, F, Fe, end 2n. At Vell YVU28, trace elements Cd, Cr, Cu,
Pb, Ni, end Ag were measured slightly above analytical detection limits (ug/l level only)
in the first two samples collected, but have not been detected in subsequent sempl es. Of
the five trace elements first mentioned, only iron at Yell YYU30 has been measured above 1
mg/l and has not exceeded 1.5 mg/l.
Yolf Creek Coel. Yell YYC31 monitors water quality in the Yolf Creek coal seam end is
located in the southeastern portion of the Toast mining area. Table 7-18 presents summary
information regarding water types depicted on the trilinear diagram and table listing of
percent milliequivelent values found in Appendix 7-4. Well YVC37 commonly exhibits e
54 Revised 03/01/95
