With the establishment of the new boneyard, the area
has not been used very extensively over the last few years. This
has resulted in a dense stand of herbaceous species as well as some
shrub species. The heavy stand of vegetation has restricted access
to the area and has also made movement in the area somewhat difficult
and dangerous due to the large rattlesnake population that has become
In order to eliminate vegetation temporarily while cleanup in
the boneyard procedes, mine personnel plan to spray the area with
a non-selective short term (one season} herbicide. A smaller area
selected for organization and storage of materials will have an application
of a non-selective long term (three-five seasons) persistent herbicide.
The short term herbicide to be used will be DIQUAT at an application
rate of two quarts of material in 100 gallons of water. This application
rate will cover one acre. The long term persistent herbicide planned
for use is SPIKE TREFLAN at an application rate of 125 lbs. of granular
material per acre. The area of application for these two herbicides
is shown on the attached map. Mine personnel would like to begin
this operation in early July. It should be noted that neither of
these chemicals are restricted and that they were selected for their
environmental safety characteristics.
This letter serves as a basis of information and a request for
approval for this operation consistent with 4.18(4)(8) Protection
of Fish, Wildlife and Related Envrionmental Values in the Regulations
of CMLRB.
•
