..
..:. ~~ •
April 7, 1987
Dear Sirs:
iii iu~~~iin~iii~~ •
Lana Jo Chapin
11165 County Rd. 250
Durango, CO 81301
303-247-1541
The issues of aggregate mining along the upper reaches of the Animas
River (beetween Baker's Bridge and Trimble Lane) and the surrounding
rnncerns including fish and wildlife management and soil conservation
have cromca again to the public's attention and long overdue actions seem
to be corimiencing. The Cowty's approval of the expansion of existing
aggregate: mining operations and the approval of more operations has
raised grave concerns for the existence of the Animas River Valley as
we ono:: now it.
At the April 6 meeting of the Planning Staff and Board a resolution
was passed to begin work on a River Management Plan of this reach of
river.
I am serr9ing a copy of a June '85 Herald article and a copy of `a
letter recently presented to the Planning Staff and County Commissioriers
to help you becrome oriented with this situation.
To avoid further damage to the riverway, I am working towards asking for
a moratorium on activity within the riverway ( unless it is neccessary
to protect from further loss) until the River Management Plan is completed
and approved. I feel this could expedite work on such a plan.
I am writing to you to alert you of this situation and ask that you,
within your area of exp~tise,.lend help towards a solution. The La Plata
CountyComnissioners and Planning Board can be reached at 303-259-4000.
Your attention tc ar.3 corte!!ents on the issue of a River Management Plan
for the reach of river between Baker's Bridge and Trimble Lane, in
regards to soil conservation and fish and wildlife habitat will be greatly
apprecieited. With cooperation, I feel sure that a positive solution can
be achieved.
Ericlosw:es
Sii crerel~y ^,
iti
Lana Jo Chapin
Copies Furnished:
United ;hates Fish and Wildlife Service; Rick Krueger, Bi1lNewnan,Vern Helbig
Coloado Division of Wildlife; Bob Clark, Rich Sherman
Army Corps of Engineers; Cam, Davis
