• GEOLOGICAL EVALUATION
of
HYDROLOGIC REGIME
at
HAHRS NEST :LINE. SO!'.F3SET COf.L DISTRICT
GUNNISON COUNTY, COLORADO
K. C. Bowman, Ph.D
Coasultiag Geologist
Duzing the wiater of 1978-79 four in-mine vertical core holes, the VSC JS,
B6, f7 and 08, were drilled in the Hawks Nest East Mine to evaluate the coal
• potential between the 'E' seam, which is nov being mined, and the Rollins Sand
(~w 450 foot in-mice depth) which marks the base of the Mesaverde coals. In-
formation gained from these exploratory holes adds to our understanding of the
hydrologic regime in the area.
I closely supervised the drilling of these holes and vas thereafter able
to advise the company on various geologic problems. We were also evaluating the
in-place methane potential in the coals being cored. Therefore, members of the
Colorado Geologic Survey staff were present throughout the drilling of TiSC OS
and OB, conducting as extensive desorption program on the coals in these tvo
holes. The results of these tests together with additional geologic studies
completed by Dona Boreck, a staff member of the Colorado Survey, will soon be
available in opts-file format from the survey.
• 2.04-25a
