Mining operations in this dry pit began
in 1976 with a minor amount of exploration work in the
southwest quarter of Section 19. Excavation commenced dur-
ing the first half of 1977 in the northwest quarter of Sec-
tion 19, Township 22 South, Range 47 West (see map Exhibit C).
Prior to commencement of mining activities by Valco in 1976,
no mining was conducted on the subject lands.
An undivided fifty percent interest in the entire surface
and mineral rights in the land is owned in fee simple by the
operator. The remaining fifty percent interest in the land
is owned by the Ullom family. The operator's right to mine
the Ullom family's property interest is covered by a lease
agreement, a copy of which is on file and available for
inspection at the offices of Valco, Inc. in Rocky Ford.
Core information indicates overburden varying from 8 to
15~ feet. The sand and gravel deposit varies between 9 and
27 feet. It is a bench deposit well above the water table.
Thus, water will not be encountered during excavation.
The operator plans to remove approximately 50,000 tons
of pit material annually. Based on this information, mining
stages have been estimated for five years in length, each
stage producing approximately 250,000 tons, t 3,000 tons
(see map Exhibit D-1).
Soils and overburden will be removed, segregated and
stored for reclamation. Overburden storage may be on any
nearby stage, with the exception of the next stage to be
c8
5
