-5- ' BIT E RECLAMATION PLAN Landscape Design After mining is completed from South to North, the area will be shaped and graded. Where possible the final grading should be done on the contour. Slopes should be cut or filled so no slope is greater than 3:1, and flatter than that as much as possible. The land will be scarified to a depth of at least G inches followiiag grading to provide better cohesion between topsoil and the graded area. After spreading topsoil on the graded area, any area with excessive compaction will be chiseled. Topsoil In order to minimize the total surface area affected by the operation, 12-36" of topsoit will be removed to continue the mining operations. Topsoil will bce stockpiled prior to mining. If the stockpiled topsoil is to remain for extended periods, the stockpiled topsoil will be stabilized with an annual grain crop :,uch as wheat or sorghum or adapted native grasses if erosion from the stockpiled topsoil affects the surrounding area. Fertilizer A soil test should be made to determine the proper amounts of fertilizer to apply.. Fertilizer should be applied prior to seeding of the cover crop. Fertilizer application will be in accordance with the type of fertilizer re- quired and equipment available. Cover Crop A cover crop rich as sorghum or sorghum-sudan grass should be planted in a timely fashion after topsoil is replaced. SVeed control may be necessary to insure adequate cover crop. Cover crop residue may be supplemented with clean straw mulch if necessary. Any straw mulch used will be anchored with use of a crimper.
