Collins, Colorado State
Archaeologist, regarding the lithic scatter site recorded in 1973 and within the permit area of
this proposed operation. After examining the map Ms. Collins provided, I have determined
that this site is currently outside the area that would be affected. I am not at all surprised that
an archaeological site would be found near the spring. The vicinity of this spring has many of
the excellent characteristics that would be favorable for at least asemi-permanent camp.
As stated in the permit, this spring does not produce a sufficient amount of water to warrant
utilization as a water source for this operation. It therefore is not included in the plans,
although it is within the permit area. Furthermore, access to the spring by a water truck,
using the existing access road, would be difficult without considerable upgrading of the
roadway. It is still possible that at some time in the future the water generated by this spring
would 6e deemed useful. A permit change would be needed to provide that use as part of this
operation. Therefore, in recognition of this potentially important site, a commitment is made
that, prior co use of the spring, examination of this site would be made by an archaeologist
and full incorporation of protective measures implemented if, at that time, the site was
deemed worthy of protection.
If you have any questions, please call.
Respectfully,
~~~~
Mark A.
