3. It is possible that measurable subsidence would not be evident in 2M-TDR for 12
months or so. If we do nothing at ZM-TDR now, and install an improved SMW at 7H
later we will be in a better position to respond with a demonstrated technology at 2M-TDR if
and when the need arises.
Alternate SMW to be considered include;
1. Cased slim hole for gamma logging with/without radioactive tracers at joints and 5 feet
sections at bottom, no TDRs.
2. Similar completion to 2M-TDR, 4 TDR cables and cemented tubular. The tubular
installed with DV tools (Requires larger diameter hole and larger tubular cemented in
the hole) to cement between the A and B Grooves and above the A-Groove. The tubular
is cemented in place to provide access for gamma logging and inspection of damage to
the tubulaz resulting from ground movement above the cavern.
3. Drill, case and cement hole to within 100 feet of the R-6/L-6 contact, drill out at bottom
to 45 feet above Dissolution Surface, install thin tubular (2 inch) with 4 TDR cables as
in 2M-TDR and squeeze cement to 50 feet above the casing. With this option the upper
portion of the TDRs are not grouted and this allows replacement of the TDRs (by
drilling out the bottom of the hole) if the cables malfunction.
All SMW options include an open case hole with 5 foot sections on the bottom and possibly
radioactivity spacers at the joints for access for gamma logging and for observation of breaks in
the casing (caliper or down hole viewer.)
Natural Soda Inc. requests approval to proceed with options 1. Monitor TDR-3 at 2M-TDR, and
2. Design alternative SMW for later in 2003.
If there are any questions please contact Plant Manager Kyle Barbot or me.
Sincerely,
Ed Baker, REM
EHS Manager
CC: EPA
CDMG
EPA-Ken Phillips
