State Req. <br />• APPENDIX 7-7 <br />2.06.8 RECONNAISSANCE INVESTIGATION FOR THE IDENTIFICATION <br />OF THE POTENTIAL ALLUVIAL VALLEY FLOORS IN THE <br />DIRECT VICINITY OF SENECA II MINE <br />At the request of the Colorado Department of Mine Land Reclamation, a <br />reconnaissance survey has been taken in the direct vicinity of the Sen- <br />eca II Mine to identify the possible occurance of alluvial valley floors. <br />This survey was done in concurrence with OSM's "Alluvial Valley Floor <br />Guidelines, Part I" (1980). Basic conclusions were drawn from studies <br />currently being conducted by Seneca Coals, Ltd. <br />There are three parts to this report. The first part gives a brief descrip- <br />Lion of the study area. The second concerns the basic study components <br />such as water availability for all drainages in the vicinity of the Seneca II <br />Mine, both for flood irrigation and subirrigation and geomorphic charac- <br />• teristics. The final part gives basic conclusions on areas identified as <br />potential alluvial valley floors as to how they have reacted to the mine <br />historically. <br />A. Study Area <br />The Seneca II Mine permit area lies almost entirely in the Grassy Creek <br />Drainage Basin with a small portion (640 acres) to the southeast being <br />drained by Fish Creek. Each of these drainages are subbasins of the <br />Yampa River which in turn flows westward into the Green River then to <br />the Colorado River. Exhibit 7-3 is a map which delineates the drainage <br />basins and surface water bodies in the direct vicinity of the Seneca II <br />Mine. As one can see, Grassy Creek discharges into the Yampa River at <br />Mount Harris just east of a United States Geological Survey Gaging <br />Station and Fish Creek discharges in Trout Creek further to the east. <br />In the permit application, quantitative information regarding the quan- <br />tity and quality of both ground water and surface water in the direct <br />vicinity of the mine is given in Sections 7-I through 7-VI. Additional <br />information regarding soil and vegetation types is given in Tab 9 and <br />Tab 10 respectively. <br />7-7-1 Revised S/27/81 <br />
