<br />slabs were suspected to be part of a feature of unknown type or age, though the absence of charcoal
<br />or charcoal staining suggested this was not a hearth feature.
<br />' Excavation of Test Pit 5 reached 110 cmbs. It was terminated at this depth for safety reasons,
<br />and because wooden planking, possibly a floor, was encountered. Cultural materials were found in
<br />' all levels of excavation (Table 5) and sterile sediments were no[ reached. Test Pit 5 appeazs to have
<br />truncated a possible below-grade historic feature, such as a cellar. A definite infilling of a ptt or
<br />' below-grade room is appazent in the test pit profiles (Figure 4, Figure 6), and the planks, beams and
<br />stone found in the southern and eastern part of the test pit in the lower levels of excavation appear
