1
to
Test Pit 1 was excavated through nine levels, to a depth of 90 cmbs. Two of the last three
levels were sterile. A summary of what was found is shown in Table 1. The bulk of historic
' materials in this test pit comes from the top 30 cm. Stratigraphy indicates materials and disturbance
from the historic occupation extend to at least part ~vay through the 20-30 cmbs level, but below that
the sediments appear largely intact and undisturbed except for rodent activity. Chipped stone
' debitage was found as deep as 70-80 cmbs. Aboriginal artifacts occur in all levels except two above
this point. The densest and most diverse aboriginal assemblage comes from the top two levels.
' Table 1 Summary of results from Test Pit 1 (200N 205E)

N
1

1
1

1
1•
Depth
(cmbs)
EuroAmerican anifacts Aboriginal artifacts (may be
of EuroAmerican origin)
Comments
0-10 8 bone, 6 ceramic, I S glass I debitage, I flake tool, I
mano frag., I poss. metate
frag. charcoal flecking and burned clay also
present
10-20 24 bone and burnt bone, I
cu[ nail frag. 2 debitage, I ceramic, 2 poss.
ground stone, I mano mottled soil
20-30 1 pc. unknown substance 2 debitage all artifacts from upper 5 cm of level
30-40

..

.. ~ sediments appear intact and
undisturbed, except for rodent activity;
from this level down; no artifacts
40-50 I debitage
50-60 2 bone 1 debitage
60-70 no artifacts
70-80 2 debitage
80-90 no artifacts
Test Pit 2 (179N 201 E1
Test Pit 2 was placed among GAP #s 1 and 2, and AP #s 7-9, a cluster of probes all of which
were positive for litlric component materials. All the probes in this azea had been dug with an auger
of one form or another, so no depth control was present for the recovered materials.
Test Pit 2 .vas excavated to 60 cmbs. The last tluee levels (30-60 cmbs) were sterile. Both
historic and li[liic component materials were found in the top three levels (0-30 cmbs) (Table 2).
The top two levels retain the bulk of the cultural materials, have charcoal flecking, and are the only
levels that clearly indicate the presence of an intact cultural level. The presence of sparse and
scattered aboriginal artifacts below this does not clearly indicate a separate cultural level, especially
since rodent disturbance was common throughout this test pit. The sediments of the lower four
levels appear to be largely intact and undisturbed, with the exception of the rodent disturbance.
1
