It is important to select floral species capable of germination and establishment on the specific range site soils in which they are to be planed. It is also important to select a variety of species capable of supporting the postmining land use, while simultaneously providing vegetative cover [hat enhances erosion and sediment convol. Therefore, species selection for Permanent Revegetation seed mixn)tes will purposefully include species that create suitable wildlife habitat and browse. Potential plant species meeting permanent revegetation selection criteria that may be used in these seed mixtures include but are not limited to those listed in Table 5. Permanent Revegetation seed mixtures will preferentially emphasize the use of native plant species, with introduced species being used only as necessary for special-purpose plantings and as approved by the BLM. Special plantings may include but are not limited to wildlife mitigation measures for browse and cover, woody plant density enhancement, aes[hetic purposes and resource protection (i.e., ATV trail barriers. screens, etc.). BLM requests for the use of specific species will be honored to the extent that adequate plant cover establishment for erosion control may be expected to develop from a seed mixture and to the extent that such requests are reasonable. Permanen[ Revegetation seed mixtures have been Cormulated for the soil mediums in which they are to be planted. The following seed mixtures will be used for revegetating soils salvaged from their respective range sites: Permanent Revegetation Seed Mixture-Foothills Swale (Table 71, Permanent Revegetation Seed Mixture-Foothills Pinyon/Juniper (Table 8), Permanent Revegetation Seed Mixture-Piceance Rolling Loam (Table 9), and Permanent Revegetation Seed Mixture-Dry Exposure (Table 10). The four prototype Permanent Revegetation seed mixttres presented in this plan have been formulated to: • Establish and grow on the salvaged range site soils in which they will be planted: • Respond to the expected environmental and physical needs and demands of disturbed lands within their respective range sites; • Meet the requirements of the designated postmining land use(sl: • Support establishment of the desired vegetation corrununiry; and • Meet general and specific plant community goals (i.e., grassland, shrub densities, special wildlife habitat requirements, etc.). Formulation of these sced mixtures has considered environmental conditions at the Yankee Gulch Project Piceance Site. The capability of the soil reconstruction medium to support specific species, the degree to which plant cover is required to protect the soil from erosion, the elevation range of the site, and the predominant aspect and slope are important environmental factors taken into consideration. Compatibility with other species in the seed mixture and with species in adjacent undisturbed vegetation communities was also considered. In considering species for Permanent Revegetation seed mixtures, postmining land use requirements play a significant role in selecting and determining the number of species to be used. Livestock grazing favors the inclusion of highly productive, rhizomatous grass species, while general wildlife needs where community structure and diversity of food resources are the American Soda.
