Box 1 ]93
Canon City, CO 81215
Colorado Department of Water Resources
Steve Kastner, Assistant Division Engineer
2l9 W. 5th
Pueblo, CO 81005
Dear lvfr. Kastner;
Ir1y husband and I live directly in front of the proposed gravel and strip mine, currently known as
Permit #CUP 97-5. Agile Stone Systems, Inc. is requesting a Life of the Mne Conditional Use
Permit at this site. I have serious concerns about the following:
Possible interruption of our own well source due to blasting, digging 40 feet into the ground
for the gravel, and pumping a minimum of 30,000 gallons of water per day just to wash the
rock without any survey into the potential long and short teen effects of such a quantity oC
water use in our azea. There also has been mention that they may use Tallahassee Creek itself
as a water sntirce. This is semi acid land and although we do get Springtime floods them is
not a whole lot of water to go around. I do not want to lose my water source!
• To access the North side of Tallahassee Creek by rail and car Agile Stone Systems, Inc. is
apparently proposing to utilize corrugated metal pipe culverts for crossings. Tallahassee
Creek floods and spills over its own banks on a regular basis with the Spring runoff and rains -
unless they commit to building a major bridge to make the rail line accessible to the proposed
Granite Quairy we will be seeing heavy oil and waste run-off washing into the Arkansas River
as often as the area floods, yet we have seen no plans for major bridge construction. Also, the
settling pond for the Granite Quarry is located close enough to Tallahassee Crcck to provide
concerns of waste and sedimentation contamination of the Arkansas during the Spring run-off.
Also, they are requesting 24 hour per day, 7 day per week operation ofthe rail carsnine and 16
hour trucking operations, the latter across a single lane, narrow bridge which is not designed for
heavy loads. They plan to blast granite rock located directly above a known geological fault line.
I am not against conuttetce and industry in the Fremont County area. 1 am against commerce and
industry without regulation and careful governance -especially when it's taking place in my back
yard. Please do not allow this project to proceed until proper regulations are in place!!
Sincerely,
Susan Steers
cc' Governor Roy Romer, Senator Ken C.hloubcr, RepresentativcJ.,arry Schwarz
