Metals and Cvanide: The assimilative capacity of Cripple Creek was evaluated using the assumptions that the
entire flow from the sediment pond would reach Cripple Creek during critical conditions.
Using the mass-balance equation provided in the beginning of Section IV, the low flows in Cripple Creek provided
in Section III, the background concentrations from upstream in Cripple Creek contained in Section II, and the in-
stream standazds for metals shown in Section II, assinlative capacities were calculated. The data used and the
resulting calculations of the allowable dischazge concentrations, M,, are set forth in Table A-9 for chronic
assimilative capacities and in Table A-10 for acute assimilative capacities.
Table A-9
Chronic Assimilative Capacities for Metals and Cyanide in Cripple Creek
Parameter Upstream
Low Flow

QI cfs Effluent
Flow

QZ (cfs Combined
Flow

Q3 (cfs Upstream
Concentration

Mt Calculated
Assimilative
Capacity
MZ Water Quality
Standazd

M3 Notes
Al, Dis ug/1 0,5 0.6 1.1 312 -- NA 2
Cd, Dis (ug/l) 0,5 0.6 1.1 2 5.6 3.97
Cu, Dis (ug/1) 0,5 0.6 1.1 21 -- 17.3 1
Fe, Trec (ug/1) 0.5 0.6 1.1 403 1498 1000
Pb, Dis (ug/l) 0.5 0.6 1.1 0 10.6 5.78
Mn, Dis (ug/l) 0.5 0.6 1.1 9018 - 2135 1
Hg, Dis (ug/1) 0.5 0.6 1.1 0 0.018 0.01
i, Dis (ug/1) 0.5 0.6 1.1 33.8 156 100.16
Zn, Dis (ug/l) 0.5 0.6 1.1 391.6 -- 227.76 1
Note 1: The ambient water quality in Cripple Creek is exceeding the standard for dissolved copper, manganese, and zinc.
