higher elevations in the Roan Plateau. The canyons at the site
a are not of sufficient size to affect the general air masses and
cause large variations in precipitation.
a) Seasonal variation
Six precipitation gauges were operated within the project
site for periods of up to five years (1970-1974). Based
on the data collected, the normal annual precipitation at
the project site was measured at 16 inches. The distribution
of normal precipitation (in inches) is summarized as follows:
Jan Feb Mar ~ M~ Jun Jul Aug Seg Oct Nov Dec
1,58 1.15 1.28 1.18 1.29 1.15 1.05 1.79 1.17 1.59 1.25 1.52
The distribution of monthly precipitation demonstrates that
• the precipitation throughout the year is fairly uniform, with
the winter season receiving slightly more precipitation than
the summer. June and July receive the least precipitation
during the year. About one-half of the annual precipitation
is received in the form of snow.
Precipitation records from the six site stations and four
regional National Weather Service (NWS) stations, selected
for their apparent hydrometeorological homogeneity and
proximity to the project site, were summarized for the
five-year period of record. Table R-1 presents the monthly
totals compiled from the daily records.
b) Rainfall Intensities
Rainfall depth-duration-frequency data were developed for
the site. Selected data for the Upper Parachute Creek basin
. are given below:
R-3
