' COST
r CM

1
1
1
• Practid App~es for Effative E & S Conwl - SO
Material Costs
This is the actual cost of the material, including shipping costs to the site. In
order to evaluate materials against other dissimilar products (i.e. hydraulic
mulches vs blankets, dry straw mulches vs soil sealants), the costs are related to
area.
For example, rather than give the cost of recycled paper mulch per ton, the cost
is converted into a per acre or per square foot cost:
Paper mulch
Shipping
Application rate
CM
or
or
_ $200.00/ton
_ $ 20.00/ton
= 2 tons per acre
= 5440.00 per acre
= 5 .09 per sq yd
= S .O1 per sq ft

Another example can be given for erosion control blankets:
Straw blanket
S~PP~B
Application Rate
CM
or
or
_ $ 33.00 per roll
_ $ 3.00 per roll
= 80.67 rolls per acre
= 52,904.12 per acre
= S .60 per sq yd
= 5 .54 per sq ft

1

Field Note: Hydraulic applications are usually estimated on a per acre or
square foot basis; rolled products on the otherhand are estimated
on a square yard basis. For comparison purposes, the same unit
of area measurement should be used.
C
Add
,,~
-otts
' This variable reflects the costs associated with additional materials necessary to
install an erosion control product. e.g. staples or geotextile pins for rolled
' products; tackifier or bonding agent for blown straw mulch or rebar for
geo[extile confinement systems. These costs should be calculated in the same
units as the material costs.
1

1 © 1995 IECA
