Coulson Excavating Company, Inc. - Bonser Gravel Pit
Exhibit E -Reclamation Plan
Il that is should take about 1.5 days to evaporate that amount of soil moisture under clear skies, then
moisture content measurements should be made at the end of the first day and every few hours during the
second day.
If the soil moisture becomes too dry during compaction (1 % dry of optimum) as predicted from the charts
in Appendix Il, then a volume of water calculated to raise the moisture content by 1 % will be applied
evenly over the entire lift surface.
Topsoil and Overburden Handling
As shown on Figure 1: Exhibit D, gravel extraction is expected to proceed sequentially from south to
north, from Pit 1, to Pit 2, then to Pit 3. The total overburden (topsoil + subsoil) volume that will
stockpiled for the 23.3 ac of Area I is about 94,108 cu yd, about 43,273 cu yd of topsoil and 50,835 cu yd
of overburden. This stockpile will be approximately 2,101 ft long, 20 -30 ft high and 40 - 60 ft wide, with
1: I side slopes.
Topsoil and overburden removal will begin one year after permitting, with gravel removal starting 30 to
60 days later. Approximately 1 - 2 ft of topsoil and 0.~ - 1.5 ft of subsoil will be salvaged and used in
reclamation.
Salvaged overburden will be placed on top of the compacted liner throughout the grave] pit azea. Prior to
gravel extraction topsoil will be stripped to about I.0 ft and subsoil to about 1.5 ft (a 2.5 ft thick layer)
and initially stockpiled along the north side of the entire gravel pit. After the first 23.3 ac of Area 1 has
had gravel extracted, overburden will be directly replaced back into the pit where the gravel has been
extracted. Subsoil will be replaced creating a layer about 1.5 ft thick in all areas. Salvaged topsoil will be
put back on top of the subsoil creating a topsoil layer about 1.0 ft thick in all areas. The haul road will
also be reclaimed to pasture grass by disking of the road, and placing 1.0 ft of topsoil on top of it. After
topsoiling, the land will be seeded with a native seed mix.
The topsoil and subsoil stockpile will be seeded with the seed mix below, hay mulched and crimped to
m;nim;ze erosion. An aggressive mowing program will control noxious weeds on the stockpile.
Seeding and Fertilizing
The current vegetation type on the site is pasture and hayfields dominated by smooth brome (Bromopsis
inermis). Hay is harvested from the fields 3 or 4 times each year starting in early June. Restoration will
consist of seeding the area with native grasses and drought resistant alfalfa. The recommended seeding
method is by drill, and seeding rates assume this method. The topsoil and subsoil stockpile will be seeded
with the seed mix in Chart 1, with hay mulched and crimped to minimize erosion. An aggressive mowing
program will control noxious weeds on the stockpiles.
