Acid Forming Material
• The potential acid-forming zone identified by Front Range Labs is the Upper
Rider coal seam in drill hole 22c. As described above, the Upper Rider seam is
extremely lenticular and only appears at isolated locations.
In the operation of the Meadows No. 1 mine, the Upper Rider seam was mined
and removed for blending and blended with Pinnacle seam coal when the Upper
Rider was equal to or greater than 2.0 feet in thickness; admittedly, the len-
ticular nature of the coal seam and the poor quality thereof pre-empted most
efforts to recover the coal.
When the Upper Rider coal was not sold, the material was removed and
blended with other strata. Blending was accomplished by the removal of the
material in lifts by motor-scrapers and deposited in the overburden storage
areas. Care was taken that no carbonaceous material be left closer than 6 feet
• of the surface of storage piles.
Further material blending occurred during reclamation of the disturbed
area. See Section 2.05.3 for acid-forming material grading monitoring proce-
dures.

- 78 - (Rev. 5/86)
