6/82
42C--Unnamed gravelly loam, 3 to 12 percent slopes. This deep,
well drained soil is on mountain side slopes and benches. It formed in
alluvium and colluvium derived dominantly from igneous rocks. Elevation is
7,800 [0 8,500 feet. The average annual precipitation is about 16 to 18
inches, the average annual air temperature is 37 to 40 degrees F, and the
frost-free season is 50 to 75 days.
Typically, the surface layer is dark grayish brown gravelly loam about
11 inches thick. The subsoil is pale brown gravelly clay loam about 19
inches thick. The substratum to a depth of 60 incli~ .s very pale brown
very gravelly sandy loam.
Included in this unit are small areas of a sir,:,..: soil that has highly
weathered bedrock at depths of 20 to 40 inches.
Permeability of [his Unnamed soil is moderate. Available water
capacity is moderate. Runoff is slow, and the hazard of water erosion is
slight.
Most areas of this unit are used for livestock grazing and wildlife
habitat, a few areas are used for irrigated hay.
The potential plant community on this unit is mainly Letterman
needlegrass, Columbia needlegrass, mountain brome, Idaho fescue. Other
plants that characterize this site are slender wheatgrass, low rabbitbrush,
and mountain snowberry. The average annual production of air-dry vegetation
is 1,500 pounds oer acre.
If the range condition deteriorates, the proportion of less preferred
forage plants increase, and the proportio^, of preferred forage giants
decrease. Therefore, grazing should be managed so that [he desired balance
of species is maintained in the plan[ community.
-7-
