Cp
Preparation Costs
Pracuml Approac6~r Elrxtive E & 5 Control - 82
Some technologies, such as erosion control blankets, require a certain amount of
surface work (i.e. seedbed preparation); other technologies, such as hydraulic
applications typically do not. These preparation costs should be considered and
added to the overall costs for a particular practice. Fore example:
A specification has been written for hydraulic seeding of a 3: I slope which
requirrs no surface preparation: The Cp factor would be S0.
A specification might also be written for erosion control blankets on the same
slope which might call for blankets to be installed as to "manufacturer's
recommendations" ,which would necessarily include some seedbed preparation
such as raking, rock removal and perhaps application of seed and fertilizer prior
to blanket installation.
While the material costs of the seed and fertilizer might be the same for both
applications, the method of application varies. In hydraulic applications, the
seed and fertilizer application occurs in one step and is part of the technology:
In nlanket applications, seed and fertilizer is applied in a separate operation, and
adds, along with surface preparation, to the cost of application. The Cp for
blankets is then greater than $0.
Field Notes: Some technologies, sucA as turf reinforcement materials (IRM) or
biotechnical composites (BCJ require extensive preparation
procedures. However, these costs can generally be included
under Cl, Installation Costs.
S[JNIl~IARY
Using the example of the straw blankets applied over 1 acre on a 3:1 slope
requiring surface preparation, we could derive the following costs:
CM = 52,904.12 per acre
CA = + 5 484.00 (for staples)
Cl = + S 403.33 per acre
Cp = + S 200.00 per acre (approx)
TOTAL COSTS (C) _ $3,991.45 per acre
or = S 0.83 per sq yd
or = S 0.09 per sq tt
O 1995 fECA
