The site is on the south
side of the road, just sou±~h:of the stack yard.
The present land use is rangeland as part of field 27 of your ranch
conservation plan of operations, The vegetation consists of sparce
stands of pinyon-juniper with big sage brush dominating the site.
The thin stands of grass include Western wheatgrass, cheat grass, -
squirrel tail and traces of Indian ricegrass and many annual weeds.
The range site is a Loamy foothills.
The soil mapping unit is 42-D, Scholle stony loam on 3 to 12% slopes,
as identified in the Paonia Soil Survey. This soil unit is positioned
on old terraces, mesas or benches. The surface four (4) inches are stony
loam with moderate permeability (0.6 to 2.0 inches per hour). The sub-
soil from four (4) to twenty (20) inches is gravelly clay loam also with
moderate permeability. The underlying material is gravelly and cobbly
loans to 60 inches or more.
The soil pH is 6.6 to 8.4. Salinity is less than 2 Mmhos/cm. The Shrink-
swell potential is low-moderate-low for the respective soil profiles. The
risk of corrosion for uncoated steel is high but low for concrete,
This soil unit, as pit run, is fair for roadfill because of low strength
and the moderate shrink-swell potential of the 4-20 inch profile. The
material is poor as a source of topsoil because of the small stones. It
is suitable for sand and gravel, if crushed and/or washed,
Reclamation after gravel removal will be to grade the area to the west
on about 1 to 2% slope to fit the irrigated field on the east and the
hillside slope on the west. Stock piled topsoil will be spread about
two (2} feet thick uniformity over the area and graded for use as irrigated
pastureland. An irrigation ditch will be installed on grade along the
easterly edge of the area.
The area will then be prepared for seeding for irrigated hayland and
pastureland, A standard mixture for Montrose .County of Wheatgrass and
O Alfalfa will be drilled in the spring of the year into the prepared
seed-bed, Fertilizers will be applied according to soil fertility tests
`J at the time of planting,
