stripping the topsoil. These trees will be placed in a sepazate pile and made available for firewood
• collection.
The Packrat Mine was reclaimed by importing alluvial soil from the Gateway azea. The material
was used to cover the backfilled portal and regraded waste embankment azea. This material will be
stripped to the extent possible, but it is expected that only 4 to 6 inches of material will be salvaged
over an azea of approximately 1.0 acres. This is a volume of 672 cubic yazds, assuming an average
soil depth of 5 inches. Since there is no room at the Packrat portal area for storing this material, the
material will be used for the creation of the MSHA berm along the Packrat access road. These
berms will be seeded with the mix described in the reclamation plan to minimize erosion.
The following azeas of topsoil stripping correspond to the azeas shown on map C-lA.
Area I: Most of the Whirlwind portal area was previously reclaimed without placing topsoil;
accordingly, there is only a limited amount of topsoil that can be salvaged from the previously
. reclaimed azea. Almost all of the salvageable topsoil in this azea occurs on the slope of the
reclaimed waste pile, which covers about 1.6 acres. This material will be stripped to a depth of 6
inches and will be placed in the Whirlwind stockpile on the north side of 5/10 Road (Stockpile #1).
This represents about 1,300 cubic yazds of topsoil. The existing growth media on top of the waste
pile pad will be used to construct MSHA berms azound the edge of the pad.
Area 2: The waste embankment will expand east over Area 2, which is relatively flat with gentle
slopes. Most of the soil borings were completed in this azea, where topsoil ranges from 1.2 feet to
2.3 feet in thickness. There aze a number of rock outcrops in the azea where no topsoil is available.
Based on the collected soil samples, the average topsoil thickness in this azea is 1.78 feet. When the
rock outcrops aze subtracted, the average thickness is estimated to be 1.6 feet. Since the azea is 8.42
acres in size, the volume available for stripping is 21,700 cubic yazds. Initially, only about 5,900
cubic yazds will be stripped and placed in Stockpile #1, located north of 5/10 Road, for use in final
reclamation. The stockpile will have 3H:1 V sideslopes. A smaller stockpile will exist on the portal
bench as shown on Map C-2 (Stockpile #3). This azea will have the same 3H:1 V sideslopes and will
~~
Whirlwind Mine June 07 D-15
