Work Plan for Alluvial Groundwater Characterization, Big Elk Mine Adrianerovvn <br />To some extent, this information has already been collected. An inventory of domestic wells in the <br />study area that have been currently permitted with the Colorado State Engineers Office was compiled <br />prior to the baseline groundwater investigation for the deep aquifer systems in 1996. This <br />information will be supplemented with more current data, as necessary. <br />• Description of recharge, storage, and dischazge characteristics of the saturated alluvium <br />• Evaluation of potential impacts to alluvial groundwater as a result of underground coal mining <br />activities. <br />Several of the preceding tasks have likely been completed, at least in part. The current work will draw <br />significantly on the work which has already been performed on behalf of Juniper Coal Company or their <br />predecessors. <br />Communication and interaction with CDMG will be maintained throughout the planning and <br />implementation of the alluvial aquifer investigation. <br />4. WORK PLAN TASKS <br />The following tasks will be performed: <br />4.1 Obtain CDMG Concurrence on Scope and Work Plan <br />Early in the program, a meeting (or series of meetings) will be held with CDMG to present and refine <br />the baseline evaluation approach. <br />The fu•st of these meetings on the alluvial groundwater characterization took place on February 13, 1998. <br />Several conversations followed to refine the approach and the analytical suite. Similar meetings took <br />place with CDMG in 1996, as the overall Hydrologic Monitoring Plan was prepazed. <br />4.2 Compile Existing Data <br />Public domain and proprietary data available for the azea will be compiled and evaluated. This includes <br />existing hydrogeologic studies published by the USGS, along with State Engineer well records. In <br />addition, public domain studies performed by and for nearby mining operations will be incorporated, to <br />the extent that such data are applicable to the Big Elk Project site. Seep and spring sampling data <br />collected by NorWest will also be evaluated, with regard to alluvial aquifer issues. <br />4.3 Install Monitoring Wells <br />Monitoring wells will be installed at 20 locations within the study area, at the locations shown on Plate <br />1. The program will involve a combination of 2-inch and 3/4-inch internal diameter (ID) monitoring <br />wells.
