Groundwater seepage
was encountered in test hole 3 at a depth of 12 feet beneath the existing ground surface at the time of
drilling. V/tten measured 7 days after the drilling was completed, groundwater levels were encountered in
all of the test holes with the exception of test hole 2. The groundwater levels were encountered at depths
ranging from 1 to 16 feet below the existing ground surface. I[ should be noted that groundwater
conditions can be expected to fluctuate with changes in precipitation and runoff at the site.
Foundation Recommendations
Based on the subsurface conditions encountered in the test holes, the results of the field and laboratory
investigations and the proposed construction, we recommend that the proposed building structures be
founded on sVaight-shaft drilled piers advanced into the underlying undisturbed clays[one-shale bedrock
materials.
Shallow foundations placed on swelling clays and/or bedrock materials can experience significant
structural deformation if the materials are subjected to significant moisture changes. The drilled pier
foundation system will place the bottom of the piers in a zone of relatively stable moisture content and
make it possible to load the piers sufficiently to resist the uplift movements of the clays and bedrock
materials. The drilled "piers advanced into competent the competent bedrock materials will also offer [he
advantage of providing a uniform and high supporting capacity for the sttuctures.
