III I V I II I II IIII III Doc Date:12/11/2001 <br />• sss 2.06.8 page 1 <br />~~~ ALLUVIAL VALLEY FLOORS <br />The valley floor of Hay Gulch has been determined to be an alluvial floor by Fred M. Johnson, <br />Certified Professional Geologist No. 2718. This has been verified in discussions with the Colorado <br />Geological Survey. Only the access roadway leading to the [nine bench is located within the alluvial <br />valley floor. This roadway is an access for both the mine and apre-existing roadway for access to <br />cattle grazing on the surface (Huntington Property). Total roadway area within the alluvial valley Floor <br />is 0.92 acres. <br />Measures have been taken, as described previously, [o protect the alluvial valley floor from <br />adverse effects of mining. Water from up-slope areas surrounding the mine bench are diverted around <br />the surface facilities and stockpiles to the Hay Gulch drainage. Sediment ponds collect runoff from the <br />mine plant area. Water monitoring will insure that protection of the alluvial valley floor is maintained. <br />I[ is not an accepted regional practice [o irrigate alluvial bodies of'extent comparable [o [hose <br />which occur along Pine Gulch when there is no water available for irrigation. Fred, M. Johnson. <br />C.P.G., Clifford M. Schmid, C.L.S., and Dan Mathews, Reclamation Specialist of the M.L.R.D., <br />determined and mutually agreed, on May 30, 1990, that there was not sufficient alluvial groundwater <br />within the permit area of Pine Gulch, to enhance the productivity of agriculturally useful vegetation. [t <br />was further agreed that Pine Gulch within the permit area was neither an AVF nor a renewable <br />resource. <br />The confluence of Pine Gulch with Hay Gulch is an alluvial valley floor (AVF), but irrigated by <br />diversion ditches originating at the La Plata River. The ditch right owners do not depend on flood <br />irrigation orsub-irrigated. The S.C.S. (Cindy Dvergsten) feels that any sub-irrigation at the confluence <br />• would be from the Hay Gulch high water table. Because of support planned for Pine Gulch within the <br />permit area and insufficient alluvial groundwater to enhance productivity of agriculturally useful <br />vegetation, there will be no mining related impacts to the quality or quantity of water from Pine Gulch. <br />The alluvial deposits along Hay Gulch are shown on the Regional Geology Map included in this <br />permit application. <br /> <br />November 1993 <br />
