DESCRIPTION OF AREA:
C
This gravel pit is located 1.5 miles North then 1 mile West of
Montrose Colorado. It is located in the SW 1/4 Section 19,
Township 49 West, Range 9 West• The average annual precipitation
is less than 9•B inches. The average is less than 1 inch per
month except August and October which is 1.11 and 1.05 respectively.
The soils are a Mesa clay loam which is underlain with cobble
at about 2 feet. The balance of the soils is a Mesa gravelly
clay loam. The cobble is very near the surface of these soils.
There would be potential top soil available from the Mesa clay
loam soil.
Native vegetation found at or near the site is as follows:
Beardless wheatgrass, cheatgrass, squirreltail, sand dropseed,
galleta, blue grams, halogeton, rabbitbrush, Russian thistle,
kochia, prickley pes~r cactus, fourwing saltbush, basin big sagebrush,
spiney horsebrush, shadscale, and greasewood• The average ground
cover would be less than 15i•
Currently 6 acres of the pit is being mined. This will be
expanded to about 10 acres.
RECLAMATION PLANS:
When gravel extraction is complete the following reclamation
plan will be followed. Any topsoil encounter from this time on
will be stockpiled for later use in reclamation proceedures•
1• South head wall will be sloped to a 3:1 slope or flatter.
2• Floor of pit area will be graded to irrigate from South to
North.
3• Topsoil available will be placed on leveled area to create
as much of a growth medium as possible.
4• A pipe drop will transport water from field at South down 3:1
sloped embankment to leveled area. This will include an
inlet structure and underground pipe with outlet structure.
5• A ditch will be constructed on South edge of leveled area
to be used to distribute water to field. Gated pipe might
be used in lieu of field ditch.
6• The sloped area and leveled area will be seeded to an approved
grass mix. See attached CO-ECS-S form for details:
7• Proper irrigation water management will take place to insure
erosion from irrigation does not occur.
