Arvada series
• The Arvada series consists of deep, well drained soils
that formed in alluvium derived from shale. Arvadas soil
are on benches, terraces. and outwash tans. Slopes are
1 to 20 percent. The average annual precipitation is 12
inches, and the average annual air temperature is 48
degrees F.
Arvada soils are similar to Heldt and Potts soils. Heldt
soils do not have a natric horizon or an argillic horizon.
Potts soils are less than 35 percent clay in the control
section and do not have a natric honzon.
Typical pedon of Arvada loam. 1 to 6 percent slopes,
about 2.640 feet south and 200 feet east of the north-
west corner of section 34, T. 7 S., R. 96 W.:
A2-0 to 3 inches; pale brown (10YR 613) loam, brown
(10YR 5/3) moist; moderate medium platy structure
parting to weak tine granular, soft, triable, calcare-
ous: strongly alkaline; abrupt smooth boundary.
821t-3 to 7 inches: brown (7.SY'R 5: 2) silty clay loam,
dark brown (7.SYR 4/2) moist; weak coarse colum-
nar structure parting to moderate medium subanau-
lar blocky; hard, firm, slightly sticky and slightly plas-
tic; thin patchy clay fiims on peds; caicareous;
strongly alkaline; clear smooth boundary.
• 822t-7 to 17 inches: brown (7.5YR 5/2) silty c;ay loam,
dark brown (7.SYR 4/2) moist; moderate medium
subancular blocky structure; hard, firm, sticky and
plastic; thin, Hearty continuous clay films on peds; 15
percent white (tOYR 8/Z) salt accumulations; calcar-
eous; strongly alkaline; clear smooth boundary.
Ccasa-t7 to a0 inches; light brown (7.SYR 6/4) silty
clay loam, dark brown (7.SYR a/2} moist; massive;
very hard, firm, sticky and plastic: calcwm carbonate
accumulations as seams and mycelia; some gypsum
crystals on peds; 30 percent white (10YR 8/2) salt
accumulations; calcareous; strongly alkaiine; gradual
smooth boundary.
C-a0 to 60 inches; brown (7.SYR 5/3) silty clay loam,
dark brown (7.5YR 4/2) moist; tew tine yellowish
brown mottles (10YR 5/6); massive; very hard, firm,
slightly sticky and slightly plastic: 15 percent white
(tOYR B/2) salt accumulations: calcareous; moder•
ately alkaline.
The soium ranges from 15 to 25 inches in thickness.
Depth to calcareous material ranges from 0 to 8 inches.
A thin Al horizon is present in some pedons. The light
colored, platy A2 horizon is absent in some pedons. .
The A horizon has hue of 2.SY or tOYR, value of 5 or
6 dry and a or 5 moist, and chroma of 2 to 4. The A
• horizon ranges from moderately alkaline to very strongly
alkaline. The B horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.SYR, value
of 5 or 6 dry and a or 5 moist, and chroma of 2 to 4. The
C horizon has hue of 10YR or 7.SYR, value of 5 to 7 dry
and 4 or 5 moist, and chroma of 2 to 4.
