The upper subsoil is very dark grayish- <br />brown loam about 13 inches thick. The lower subsoil is light <br />yellowish-brown, extremely channery loam about.ll inches thick. <br />The soil overlies hard fracturAd sandstone at a depth of less <br />than 40 inches, Rock fragments range from 35 to 85 percent by <br />volume, most of which are 3/4 to 3 inches in length. Reaction <br />is neutral throughout the profile. <br />The permeability of the Parachute soil is moderate, and the effec- <br />tive rooting depth is about 30 inches.
