• crested and thickspike wheatgrass, smooth brome, and saltbush. This map
unit occurs in areas which were previously mined. Following mining,
spoil piles were graded to approximate original contour and seeded. Due
to poor reclamation, these areas were later covered with suitable
subsoil and reseeded. This map unit occurs on 11.4 percent of the study
area (Table 9-4-3).
The replaced subsoil and regraded spoil have suitable physical and
chemical properties (Tables 9-4-2 and 9-4-5). As with Map Unit 6, the
regraded spoil is more acidic, has a higher sulfate concentration, and
is more saline than the replaced subsoil. The replaced subsoil is
typically slightly more alkaline and finer textured than replaced
topsoil. Based upon eight sampled pedons (Table 9-4-4), about five
inches of suitable subsoil is available for salvage within Map Unit 8.
Map Unit 9 - Subsoiled Disturbed Land, 2 to 15 Percent Slopes
This map unit is associated with the gently to moderately sloping upland
• benches. Vegetation consists primarily of cheatgrass and fortis. The
upper horizons (A, B, C1) of this soil were disturbed or salvaged during
previous mining activity (i.e. topsoil stockpiles, roads, and
ahead-of-mining topsoil salvage). The initial stand of vegetation was
poor for these areas. Subsequently, in 1983, these areas were covered
with suitable subsoil and reseeded. This map unit occupies ahout 3.2
percent of the study area (Table 9-4-3).
Chemical and physical properties far the replaced subsoil are suitable
(Tables 9-4-2 and 9-4-5). As noted for Map Unit G, the subsoil is
typically slightly more alkaline and finer textured than replaced
topsoil. Based upon four profiles (Table 9-4-4), about eight inches of
suitable subsoil is available for salvage within Map Unit 9.
Map Unit 10 - To
This map unit is
benches or mesas
• The upper A, B,
salvaged during
soiled Disturbed Land, 2 to 15 Percent Slopes
associated with the gently to moderately sloping upland
A diverse reclamation grass stand is usually present.
and C1 horizons of this soil unit o-rere disturbed or
previous mining activity (i. e., topsoil stockpiles,
9-4-7.5 kevised ll /O1/RG
