The most limiting factors for using this soil for topsoil are the high
content of coarse fragments in the C horizon and the shallow soil depth.
Coarse fragment contents range from 15 to 40 percent for the two sampled
pedons (Table 9-4-4). Based upon two profiles, about four inches of
suitable topsoil is available for salvage within Map Unit 3.
Map Uriit 4- Shavano Variant Sandy Loam, 2 to 15 Percent Slopes
This map unit is associated with the gently to moderately sloping upland
benches and ridgetops. Vegetation consists primarily of big sagebrush
and rangeland grasses. Typically, this soil overlies fractured
yellowish-brown sandstone at depths ranging from 8 to 15 inches. This
soil represents 3.0 percent of the study area (Table 9-4-3).
This soil has the most profile development and best topsoil in the study
area (Tables 9-4-2 and 9-4-5). Soil reactions are neutral and
carbonates have generally leached from the A and B horizons. A
structural cambic B horizon with a slight clay accumulation is also
• present. Coarse fragment content typically ranges between 0 and 20
percent for the A, 6, and C horizons. Based upon six profiles (Table
9-4-4), about 12 inches of suitable topsoil is available for salvage
within Map Unit 4.
Mao Unit 5 - Shavano Variant Loam - 2 to 15 Percent Slopes
This map unit is associated with the gently to moderately sloping upland
benches and ridgetops. Vegetation consists primarily of big sagebrush
and rangeland grasses. Typically, this soil overlies soft light gray
sandy shale and siltstone at depths ranging from 10 to 17 inches. This
sail represents 3.2 percent of the study area (Table 9-4-3).
This soil, like Map Unit 4, also has moderate profile development and
fairly good topsoil reserves. The surface A and cambic B horizons have
a neutral reaction and are free of carbonates (Tables 9-4-2 and 9-4-5).
Clay contents in the B and C horizons are marginally suitable, averaging
42 percent. However, associated saturation percentages are highly
suitable (49 percent). Based upon seven profiles (Table 9-4-4), about
• 17 inches of suitable topsoil is available for salvage within Map Unit
5.
9-4-23 Revised 11/Ol/86
