• data which was utilized to confirm map unit boundaries and to determine
ranges of characteristics for each map unit is listed in Appendix 9-4-2.
Laboratory Analyses
The results of laboratory analysis of all soil samples collected during
the July 1986 soil survey are provided in Table 9-4-5. All analyses
were per•forined by Energy Labs, Inc., Billings, hiontana. A detailed
discussion of the chemical and physical properties of each map unit is
included in the following Topsoil Suitability section.
Topsoil Suitabili
The following section includes detailed descriptions, discussions of
analytical results and topsoil resource estimates for each map unit
identified during the R'ucla Mine Scraper Pit soil survey. Each map unit
was evaluated by individual sampled horizons for significant physical
• and chemical properties presented previously in Tables 9-4-1 and 9-4-2.
The range of characteristics for each soil type, based upon all sample
sites (see Table 9-4-4 and Appendix 9-4-2), was also evaluated. The
volume of topsoil available for reclamation is presented in the Topsoil
Balance Plan (Tab 9, Attachment 9-3), the Topsoil Removal and Storage
section of the Operations Plan (Tab lc"), and the Topsoil hiaintenance and
Replacement section of the Postmining Land Use Plan (Tab 13).
Map Unit 1 - Persayo Variant Sandy Loam, 15 to 35 Percent Slopes
This map unit is associated with the steeply sloping sideslopes of
premine drainages which dissect the study area. Vegetation consists
primarily of juniper and low sagebrush. Generall;~, this soil overlies
soft interbedded shale and sandstone formations at depths ranging from 2
to 10 inches. The soil represents 20.4 percent of the study area (Table
9-4-3).
All chemical and physical data, with the exception of coarse fragment
content, are suitable for this map unit (Tables 9-4-2 and 9-4-5).
However, this map unit has three significant compounding topsoil
9-4-18 Revised 11/01/86
