• sampled soil material was placed in clean, labeled, polyethylene plastic
bags, and was kept cool and as dry as possible to limit chemical
changes.
EVALUATION OF SOILS FOR RECLAMATION POTENTIAL
The soils and parent materials in the Nucla Mine Scraper Pit study area
were rated for suitability based on criteria given in Table 9-4-2.
Recommended topsoil salvage depths were generated for each map unit
identified during the baseline survey. These topsoil salvage depths
were based on average depths to the suspect parameter or average profile
depths (if the entire profile was suitable) across the entire study area
based on numerous soil sampling holes dug in each soil type. The
topsoil evaluations relied on the field descriptions of each soil map
unit as well as extensive laboratory data generated by the study.
RESULTS
• Soil Survey Maps
Thirteen soil map units were identified, mapped, sampled, and described
for the Nucla Mine Scraper Pit study area. The areal extent of each
type (in acres) is provided in Table 9-4-3. The distribution of each
type on the study area is provided on a rectified 1" = 400' scale air
photo base map (Exhibit 4-4, Soil Types and Topsoil Salvage Depths).
Typifying soil profile and soil sampling locations as well as
strategically placed observation sites are depicted on Exhibit 9-5, Soil
Sample Locations. A complete legend, which identifies all mapping unit
symbols and recommended soil salvage depths, is also provided on Exhibit
9-4.
Map Unit Descriptions
Mapping units are listed by map symbol, name, and sample number in Table
9-4-4. Detailed descriptions of each mapping unit are included with the
Topsoil Suitability section of this attachment. Field pedon description
forms are contained in Appendix 9-4-1. Strategical observation site
•
9-4-13 Revised 11/0?/86
