HALL GULCH
Hall Gulch pit is located about 4 miles Norht of Tarryall
Reservoir. The site is on a Northeast facing slops The
slope is 7 - 10%. The area has been used as a native
range land in the past.
Soils
The soil at this site is identified as Soils Unit 20D.
This mapping unit occurs on gently sloping to sloping mountain
slopes. These soils are developing on Pikes Peak Rranite. They
are shallow to moderately deep and are gravelly throughout.
Nost of the surface has scattered gravel and in places, cobble.
In a few places rock outcrop occurs.
The surface layer ranges in thickness from 3 to 10 inches. It
is dark colored and is gravelly sandy loam. The subsoil ranges
in texture from gravelly heavy sandy loam to gravelly clay loam.
The materail underlying the subsoil is disintegrating Pikes Peak
granite, mostly gravel and/or cobble with a sandy clay loam
matrix. In some places hard bedrock may occur at depths from
20 to 40 inches. Disintegrating franite occurs at depths of 6
to 15 inches.
These so41s are subject of severe water erosion when the surface
is not protected by adequate vegetative cover. The water intake
rate is moderate. The water holding capacity is moderate to low.
This soil is shallow to moderately deep. It occurs on rolling
to steep mountain slopes. It is developing on Pikes Peak
granite.
At the type location this soil is on a 38 percent slope facing
south. The elevation is approximately 9,250 feet.
Al 0-5" Dark brown (7.SYR 4/2) sandy loam, very
dark brown (7.SYR 2/2) moist; moderate
fine granular structure; soft, very friable;
this horizon contains 5 to 10 percent gravel;
noncalcareous; gradual and smooth boundary.
B1 5-11" Brown (7.SYR 4/2) gravelly sandy clay loam,
dark brown (7.SYR 3/2) moist; weak fine blocky
structure; soft, very friable; this horizon
contains 15 to 20 percent gravel; noncalcareous;
gradual and smooth boundary.
$2t 11-18" Brown (7.SYR 4/4) gravelly clay loam, dark
brown (7.SYR 3/4) moist; weak coarse primatic
structure breaking to weak meduim and fine
subangular blocks; slightly hard, very
friable; thin patchy clay films on the ped
faces; this horizon contains about
40 percent gravel; noncalcareous; gradual
and smooth boundary.
