•
1.0 INTRODUCTION
i. n
Previous vegetation studies conducted for Perna Resources Corporatodtir
in 1980 and 1982 identified pinyon-juniper, mountain shrub, riparian,
pasture, and disturbed types on their Chimney Rock Coal Hine, Archuleta
County, Colorado. Deficiencies in sampling of the plcryon-juniper type were
identified by the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Division (CMLRD), which
resulted in stipulations on the Chimney Rock Hine Permit that the pirryon-
juniper type be resampled. Permit stipulation 9 required a description of
sampling methodology and data analysis. Permit stipulation 10 required
that vegetative cover and production be sampled and a reference area
established that vas statistically equivalent. Permit stipulation 9 vas
addressed by Perna Resources consulting with and providing the CMLRD with a
description of methods to be used for the sampling.
Mariah Associates, Inc. conducted selected vegetation studies on the
pinyon-juniper vegetation type at the ChLsney Rock Mine Aarren Ridge and
• Revision 1 Area in Archuleta County, Colorado at the request of Perms
Resources Corporation (Perms) to satisfy CMLRD stipulation 10. The study
area included the pinyon-juniper type in the present permit area (Barren
Ridge) and a Revision 1 Area in which the entire affected area is vi thin
the pinyon-juniper type (NE1/4 and the NEL/4NW1/4 of Section 30, T34N, R4V) (Map
1, Appendix A).
The objectives of the study were [o:
• Qualitatively and quantitatively describe the pinyon-juniper vege-
tation in the Barren Ridge Area and areas to be disturbed (affected
area) in the Revision 1 Area per CTtLRD stipulations 9 and 10.
• Establish a reference area Eor the picryon-juniper vegetation to
serve as a benchmark for evaluating reclamation success per CM.RD
stipulation 10.
•
