-12-
•
embankment will involve approximately 48,000 cubic yards of
compacted fill.
Borrow
The results of laboratory testing on typical borrow soils
are shown on Figs. 18, 21 and 22. The available borrow soils are
essentially medium plasticity clays. In our opinion, there are suf-
ficient quantities of suitable clay materials available within the
proposed borrow areas far construction of the planned embankment.
We recommend borrow from within the reservoir areas, as much as
possible, to increase the sediment holding capacity of the reservoir.
To avoid problems with disruption of the soils near the toe of the
• embankment, we recommend that a buffer zone, approximately 100 feet
in width, be maintained between the toe of the proposed embankment
and any borrow area. Because of the relatively high water table,
it may be most convenient to make a relatively shallow excavation
over a large area. Using this method it may be possible to develop
clay soils near optimum moisture content with little processing.
Embankment Section
The proposed embankment section is shown on Fig. g The em-
bankment is a modified homogeneous embankment. We recommend con-
struction of the embankment entirely out of clay soils compacted
to high density. A pervious embankment drain is recommended for
the downstream portion of the embankment. Under normal operating
r 1
U
