I •^
Geotechnld / EnvironmenW Engineering • Materials Testing
December 22, 2003
RAG Twentymile Coal Company
29515 RCR #27
Oak Creek, CO 80467
Job Number: 03-5838
Subject: Geotechnical/Pavement Design
Investigation, Proposed Bleeder Shaft Pad &
Access Road, Twenrymile Coal-Foidel
Creek Mine, Routt County, Colorado.
Ladies and Gentlemen:
This report presents the results of the Geotechnical/Pavement Design Investigation for the proposed Bleeder
Shaft Pad and Access Road to be constructed within the Twentymile Coal-Foidel Creek Mine located in
Routt County, Colorado. The approximate location of the project site is shown in Figure # 1.
• The scope of our work included obtaining data from cursory observations made at the site, the logging of
twelve test holes, the sampling of the probable foundation and subgrade soils and the laboratory testing of
the samples obtained. This report presents recommendations for economically feasible and safe type
foundations and roadways, as well as allowable soil pressures and other design and construction
considerations that are advisable, but not necessarily routine to quality design and building practices.
Proposed Construction: If is our understanding, based on conversations with the client, that the proposed
road will be a 24 feet wide gravel surfaced road that will be subjected to construction traffic and delivery
vehicles during constmction of the Bleeder shaft and then be subjected to mainly pickup trucks after the
shaft has been completed. The Bleeder shaft road will be approximately 7100 feet in length from the
existing road to the proposed Bleeder Shaft Pad, which will be approximately 280 feet by 280 feet in size.
It is also our understanding that the Bleeder Shaft Pad will consist of the constmction of a small concrete
lined shaft with possibly small surrounding support stmctures. We have assumed that the support structures
will by one-story metal or wood framed structures with concrete slab-on-grade floor systems. Based on [he
topography in the vicinity of the proposed roadway alignment, it appears that the majority of the cut and fill
slopes will probably be less than 5 fee[ in height. However, it appears that considerably higher cut and fill
slopes maybe required in [he roadway alignment located between test holes 4 to 6.
For design purposes, we have assumed that the building loads for the support structures will be light to
moderate typical of type of constmction. If loadings or conditions are significantly different from those
above, we should be notified to reevaluate the recommendations in this report.
•
(970) 879.7888 • Faz (970) 879.7891 • nweelQmindspring.com
2580 Copper Ridge Drive • P.O.
