Threatened, Endangered, Sensitive and Management Indicator Species
During habitat and wildlife surveys no Threatened or Endangered Species
were observed. The only Sensitive Species observed was the Olive-sided
flycatcher. MIS observed or for which evidence of their presence was noted
included the red-naped sapsucker and elk.
Raptors
There is suitable raptor nesting habitat (especially for accipiters) within a 1/4
I mile radius of the site. During the surveys an active sharp-shinned hawk
nest was located. This nest is about 200 feet from the Deep Creek Road
' (FDR711) and immediately adjacent to an existing access road that will be
upgraded to access the drill site. This nest is located a few hundred feet from
the proposed drill site. In addition to the active nest there are three inactive
accipiters nests in the same immediate area. All nests were located about 40
feet up in aspens. Each was within a few feet of the Deep Creek Road (FDR
' 711). Activities associated with proposed drilling operations would have
to occur after young have fledged in July. There should be no
construction activities associated with the drilling operations prior to
August 1.
Bird Survey
Both the diversity and density of birds were what would be expected for the
habitat types found around the drill site. All species observed are known to
commonly utilize these habitat types for nesting and brood rearing. (See
Table 1)
SUMMARY
^ No federally listed T & E Species are found in the project area. With
exception of the Canada lynx, suitable habitat for all listed species is
lacking.
There is suitable habitat for some Sensitive Species. However, numbers
observed are low and habitat is more than adequate to sustain existing
' populations. Loss of a small amount of habitat through exploration activities
will not adversely affect these species.
10
