T~ INTRODUCTION
This cultural resource inventory report is submitted in compliance with the stipulations
of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Environmental Policy
Act of 1969, and Executive Order 11593 of 1971. It was prepared under PSAP
No. 78-CO-124 and Colorado State Permit No. 79-47 by Western Cultural Resource
Management, fnc. at the request of Peabody Coal Company to assess prehistoric and
historic cultural resources on properties intended to be permitted for coal mining ac-
tivity.
Project Objectives
The objectives of this project were several. The first was to confer with appropriate
state and federal agencies. The second was to review all appropriate archaeological
literature and state and federal registers. The third was to conduct the fieldwork in
three stages: (I) reconnaissance, (2) intensive survey, and (3) field analysis. The survey
was to consist of 100% coverage of the project area, recording all encountered cultural
• resources and completing as much analysis as possible in the field. The final objective
C wos to evaluate all recorded cultural resources for significance and possible mitigation
according to federal regulations (36CFR800).
Project Location
The Seneca II-W Coal Lease is located approximately 7 miles south of Hayden, Township
5N, Range 88W, Sections 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 26, 27, 34, and 35, in Routt County,
Colorado (see Figures 5-10 and 5-I I). The project is on the Hayden, Hayden Gulch,
Mount Harris, and Dunckley C~uadrangles, 7.5 minute series.
Project Organization
Thomas J. Lennon and Michael S. Burney acted as Principal Investigator while Charles
Wheeler was the field supervisor. The field crew consisted of Lane Shields, Roger
Johnson, and Richard Elk. Lane Shields acted as foreman when C. Wheeler was not in the
field. Roger Johnson took the block and white photographs, Richard Elk took the color
photographs, and Lane Shields drew most of the maps. Mr. Shields was also responsible
for the field notes, Though everyone took field notes. All field personnel participated in
• all facets of survey and site recording.
5-( Revised October 15, 1984
