~-~CI~e~ I c~ ~ 0`.
-e.~ef
State Reg.
2.04.4 A CULTURAL RESOURCE INVENTORY OF THE
SENECA II-W COAL LEASE
PREFACE 8Y
Peabody Coal Company
In 1979 Peabody Coal Company contracted Western Cultural Resource
Management, Inc. of Boulder, Colorado to conduct an archaeological
investigation of approximately 4,000 acres of proposed mine permit area
(Figure 5-2) plus approximately 300 acres of haul road corridor (Figure
5-A-2) north of the proposed mine site. Subsequent to this survey, Seneca
Coals has revised the proposed permit area. The mining area has been
reduced to 1366.9 acres and the haul road has been reduced to 91.3 acres.
The text, as written, makes no distinction between sites or isolated finds in
The old permit area versus the new (revised) permit area. Please refer to
Figure 5-2, 5-A-2, and Exhibit 5-I for the location of all sites and isolated
finds.
C • No sites in the Seneca II-W mine permit area are on or eligible for the
National Register of Historic Places. Western Cultural Resource Manage-
ment (WCRM) suggests that site SRT120 (rock art site) may be eligible to
?he Register. However, this site is outside the permit area and thus will not
be disturbed.
WCRM suggests that site 5RT 132 (possible campsite) be further tested to
determine its eligibility to the National Register and recommends avoidance
of the site. The site is inside the permit area but outside the area to be
disturbed.
Peabody Coat Company does not want to call attention to this site by
possible artifact hunters and therefore has no intention to construct a fence
around the site. Peabody Coal Company will post "Disturbance Boundary"
signs around the site. Disturbance is not allowed beyond these signs.
( + Regardless of the ultimate decision as to placement of these sites on the
Register, no impact is anticipated by the Seneca II-W Mine. Therefore, no
further work is proposed.
Revised October I S. 1984
