• ing a quick, reliable, Last-growing temporary cover primarily on topsoil
stockpiles and other temporary (such as construction-related) disturbances.
Seed mixture no. 2 (Table 5) is a "harsh-site" mixture for use in reclaiming
Less favorable areas. Areas may be considered less favorable by reason of
steepness of slope, exposure aspect, or soil conditions. In general the
southerly facing cut and fill slopes of haul roads, the Liner textured sails
of Pit 6 and other similar areas will be reclaimed with this seed mixture.
Seed mixture no. 3 (Table 6) ~s intended for reclaiming the majority of the
mininn disturbances, including pits 1, 4, and 5. Final reclaimation contous
of these areas will allow for direct seeding by drill and the rate given in
the table is appropriate for this method. This seed mixture is formulated
with the loamy soils of the Coutis-Winevada-Splitro genetic catena in mind
(see soils report).
Regarding the selected seed mixes, yellow sweetclover is included only in
the mix for stockpiles and temporary stabilization (seed mix no. 1). This is
an appropriate use for this species. It is a hardy, reliable germinator which
• grows well under disturbed conditions. At the elevation of the Grassy Creek
mine it will be a short-lived annual or biennial plant which will not reseed
itself or compete with more desirable perennials. Also, this species is
desirable as a nitrogen-fixer.
Crested wheatgrass is included in each of the seed mixes for many reason.
This highly productive perennial bunchgrass has been seeded over thousands of
acres of deteriorated or non-productive rangeland in northern Colorado and the
entire intermountain west. There are many arguments in favor of its use here.
A detained discussion will not be presented, but a few major points include:
1. No seed mix is designed to produce a stand predominantly of crested
wheatgrass.
2. Crested wheatgrass is ecologically adapted to the permit area and it
suitable for the post-mining land use.
3. The use of crested wheatgrass is reclamation, range rehabilitation,
•
IV-10
12/87
