There were several other stabilization needs that were ciscussed
for the BLM to implement prior to road closure as part cf
reclamation in the summer or fall of 1999. These include:
4.Repair of the platform over the manhole shaft entrance.'
S.Repair of the stairs to the hoist house.
6.Security of the hoist house, including a lock on the door,
boarding the windows and replacing the corrugated metal on
the side of the building and the roof.
7.General detailed recording of the inside and outside of
the structure and the securing of removable artifacts,
machinery and furniture.
Long term management plans for the Burro No. 7 include restricted
entry and interpretation of the hoist house and a sign at the
site that explains the operations at the mine and the important
role of the Burro No. 7 in local mining history.
The BLM respectfully requests that UMETCO transfer ownership so
that the BLM can acknowledge responsibility for all future
maintenance involving the headframe, hoist house, and ore truck.
The BLM will undertake continued management and protection of
these structures once surface reclamation is completed. Public
access to the site once reclamation is completed will be
maintained as non-motorized traffic only.
We look forward to working with you in the future to preserve
important historical resources on public lands in San Miguel and
Montrose Counties, while meeting the public safety and
environmental measures implemented through mine reclamation.
Any questions or comments may be addressed to Donald Englishman
of my staff at (970) 247-4874.
Sincerel ,~
alvin N.
