• Introduction
Peabody proposes to construct stock tanks in the reclaimed drainage
channels at the Seneca II Mine. These small tanks will benefit both
livestock grazing and wildlife utilization of the reclamation. This
will enhance the postmining land use at the reclaimed areas. These
stock tanks will slow the peak runoff of precipitation events and help
to minimize erosion in the drainage channels. See Exhibit 7-7 for
location of existing and proposed stock tanks.
Design
The stock tanks will be structures to enhance postmine wildlife and
livestock utilization. The capacity of the tanks will be not more than
two acre-feet and the vertical height of the embankment will be five
feet or less, as measured from the upstream toe of the dam to the bottom
of the emergency spillway. The drainage area of the tanks will be large
enough to maintain an adequate supply of water into the tank. All stock
tanks will be created in channels which are normally dry.
Construction
All stock tanks will be constructed according to State of Colorado,
Office of State Engineer's "Specifications to Govern the Construction of
a Livestock Water Tank" and USDA Soil Conservation Service's
specifications for tanks. These specifications are contained in
Addendums 1 and 2. Access to tank sites in reclaimed areas during the
construction phase will be accomplished, when possible, by trucking a
dozer down existing drainages to minimize damage to vegetation. If
necessary, access routes to the construction sites will be reseeded with
the approved seed mix. All topsoil will be salvaged prior to tank
construction and spoil material will be used for construction of the dam
embankment. After construction, topsoil will be replaced on the dam and
adjacent disturbed reclaimed areas above the elevation of the emergency

13-9-1 Revised 02/06/91
