Colorado
Dear Mr. Walker:
As a result of your concerns regazding the Phoenix Mine located in Clear Creek County,
Colorado, we have completed several inspections of the mine and talked with owner, Alvin
Mosch. Please find a copy of these inspection reports enclosed for your review. We have found
no evidence of active mining activity on the site. Our Division inspectors complete a safety
inspection of the Phoenix mine once a month while the tourist mine is open. Some safety
problems have been noted from time to time, however, either Mr. Mosch or his son, Dave, have
been responsive in correcting the problems noted. We also checked with the MSHA, Rocky
Mountain District MetaUNon-Metal staff and found that they too concluded that the Phoenix
mine is operated as a tourist mine only.
If you should have any questions about this information, please contact Bill York-Feirn at
(303)866-3650.
Sincerely,
Michael B. ng
Director
Division of Minerals and Geology
cc: Sally Hopper, State Senator
Alvin Mosch, Owner
BillYork-Feirn, DMG
m:\i mp\wcy\walker.ltr
