Spillage
Snowmass' operations have been designed to minimize spillage.
Nevertheless, spillage may occur on occasion. Any spills or accumula-
tion of fines that occur will be cleaned up and hauled to the refuse
disposal area where they will be buried. All spills will be cleaned
up at the mine and loadout prior to final reclamation of the refuse
disposal area.
Revegetation Plan
Hand-plantings of woody species are the most important aspect of the
revegetation work. Seeding of herbaceous species will be used to pro-
vide early established cover in the short term and some diversity of
permanent understory vegetation in the long term. Species and seed
mixtures proposed here for final reclamation will be used for interim
reclamation efforts (see Tables 4.4.2-1 through 4.4.2-4). Rased on
• the results of these efforts, these combinations may be modified
before the beginning of final reclamation. Also, 20 years from now,
plant selections and varieties will be available for reclamation which
are not available now. The last several years have indicated that due
to changes in regulatory requirements, reclamation technology and
experience, and species availability, recommendations for seed mix-
tures which are more than 2 to 3 years old are probably obsolete. No
changes will be implemented without prior approval of the Division.
The revegetation of the mine area is intended to provide a cover of
predominantly native species compatible to the area and to postmining
land use. Some of the native species proposed may not be indigenous
to the immediate area but should otherwise be adapted; some of the
exotics proposed may already be indigenous. Of the shrubs already
tried, Russian olive has shown the most promise. It is a drought-

4-54
