• near the end of the diversion channel to provide access across
the site to the west. The design for the dip-section, 4' CMP and
diversion channel is included in Exhibit 4B, Volume III. A por-
tion of Drawing D-4-16 is included with the calculations to show
the alignment of the channel.
Refuse Pile Terraces
The refuse pile has been designed to contain as much coal waste
as possible while keeping the areal extent of disturbance to a
minimum. The refuse pile has been analyzed from a geotechnical
standpoint and the pile is quite stable.
Due to the natural terrain, the placement of refuse would be
• prohibitive unless terraces are used. The terraces also decrease
soil erosion by allowing deposition to occur.
The refuse pile has been designed to comply with the performance
standards of section 4.14.2(2). The terrace benches are 20 feet
in width. The bench is insloped at an approximate 10 percent
slope. The design of the drainage ditches are shown on Drawing
D-4-12. Drawing D-4-9 shows the drainage pattern. The
velocities for the bench ditches are low enough not to cause ero-
sion of the refuse pile. Also, terrace relief energy dissipaters
are not required. Riprap will be utilized where slopes are steep
enough to produce erodible velocities.
• 4-50a (Revised 6-20-88)
