• sq.m. (778 lb /acre). Slightly aver half of this total we; contributed by perennial greminoids <br />(45.5 gm / ~.m.) and mast of the remainder was attributable to perennial fortis (40.5 gm / <br />sq.m.). Major individual perennial graminoid spectes in the production data were Kentucky <br />bluegrass (24.7 gm / sq.m.), nodding and wooly bromes (Bromoosis ciliaius end B lenatioes, <br />9.7 gm / sq.m. ), slender wheatgrasr (3.4 gm / sq.m. ), sun sedoe (2.9 gm / sq.m. ),and <br />bluebunch wheatgrass (2.1 am / sq.m.). <br />Among perennial fortis, the even mix of these species in low individual amounts was reflected to <br />their relatively less common occurrence es major contributors in individual clip plots, and thus <br />the undifferentiated perennial forb category is the largest single entry in the forb production <br />tlata. Perennial forb species that were abundant enough tofrequently rate individualseperalion <br />were Rocky Mountain hemlock parsley, showy daisy, and teilcup lupine. <br />Average shrub density (Table 13) was 83.4 stems / 50 sq.m. (6750 stems / acre), over half <br />of which was mountain snowberry (43.6 stems / 50 sq.m.). The other major components of <br />total stem density were Oambel oak (17.1 stems / 50 sq.m.), Saskatoon serviceberry (I 1.4 <br />• stems / 50 sq.m.), and big sagebrush (7.6 stems / 50 sq.m.). <br />3.1.5 SAGEBRUSH <br />The sagebrush vegetation type in the study area is typically dominated by big sagebrush or <br />silver saaebrush (Ariemisia cane) along with mountain snowberry (Figure 7). In some <br />locations, esp~ielly on shallow soils, dominance may be shared by big sagebrush along with <br />Douglas rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus) and mountain mahooany (figure 8). <br />Within the sagebrush type is found a small area (approx. 2 acres, Sample S-g) of vegetation <br />dominated by low sagebrush (Ariemisia arbuscula); this variant is related to extremely heavy <br />soil texture. <br />Total vegetation cover averaged 64.6 cover (Table 14), slightly less than half of which was <br />comprised of shrubs (30.0 cover). Mountain snowberry was by far the largest component of <br />the shrub cover (16.2 cover); other substantial components of the total were silver <br />sagebrush (4.6~ cover), big sagebrush (9.6~ cover), end low sagebrush (3.0~ cover). <br />• <br />Perennial forb cover of 16.8 cover was slightly more than that of perennial graminoids <br />-16- <br />
