forming nearly impenetrable thickets in some places. The vegetation,
coupled with the steepness of much of the land, precluded intensive
on-the-yrcund survey of some of tYiis tract, as will be discussed later.
The second tract, the conveyor belt corridor, is located about 2.5
miles northeast of the lease addition, and is markedly different in
appearance. Here, the vegetation is much more open, with sagebrush being
the dominant plant species (Figure 5). Some small stands of scrub oak
and scattered junipers are also found. Elevation ranges from about 6520
to 7290 feet. Most of this upland topographic setting is without water
resources, except for some intermittent drainages at the north end of the
corridor.
As noted, several previous cultural resource surveys have been
conducted in the vicinity, three of which overlapped with the two survey
tracts. One of these was an earlier lease survey for Consolidation Coal
Company (Christensen 1984) which had in part covered the southeast sector
of Section 16 in the Colowyo lease addition, meaning that about 400 acres
of the Colowyo project had already been surveyed (see Figure 1). Two
linear surveys, both transmission line rights-of-way, have been com-
pleted, one in the lease addition tract (Nickens 1988) and the other in
the conveyor befit tract (Connor 1977). In 1975, portions of the Colowyo
lease were surveyed by Joseph Lischka (1975), but his survey did not
overlap with the present one. Additional nearby cultural resource survey
was conducted for the Colorado-Ute Electric Association Craig-Rifle
transmission line corridor (Jennings and Sullivan 1977) and access roads
• (Baker and Reed 1978). This transmission line runs north-south along the
ridge just west of the lease addition tract.
The cumulative results of these projects indicated that the poten-
tial for prehistoric aboriginal resources was generally low in the area,
particularly in the higher elevations. The widely scattered known pre-
historic sites usually consist of rather small lithic scatters of arti-
facts. Historic resources were somewhat more numerous with some struc-
tures (log cabins) in the canyons and tin can scatters in the uplands,
represented campsites associated with livestock grazing activities.
Literature review and site file searches were conducted at the 8LM
White P,iver Resource Area and the Little Snake Resource Area offices.
Additionally, a site file search was requested from the Colorado Histor-
ical Society's Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation in Denver.
These searches confirmed that no additional work other than that noted
above had been conducted in the survey tracts. The searches also re-
vealed that the only previously recorded site, aside from some historic
isolated finds (IFs), in the survey tracts was 5MF402, a prehistoric
lithic scatter originally recorded by Lischka (1975). A reevaluation of
this site by Christensen (1984) recommended that the site was not eligi-
ble for the National Register of Historic Places. This site and the
recorded IFs are located in the part of Section 16 covered previously by
the Consolidation Coal Company. There were no known resources in the re-
mainder of the Colowyo survey areas.
•
