qualities rendering them eligible for the National Register of Historic
Places. In each instance, the field recording of the resource has been
or is believed to be a sufficient level of data collection such that the
research potential has been fulfilled.
CONCLUSIONS
The findings generated by the Colowyo survey conform in all respects
with those of the previous cultural resource projects. As earlier inves-
tigators have noted, the distribution of prehistoric sites appears to be
dictated principally by the availability of water. Several likely upland
site locales were checked in both tracts, but no sites were encountered.
Despite the availability of level ground and plant and animal resources,
an absence of a nearby water source apparently precluded use of the
higher elevations. Conversely, historic period encampments, most likely
associated with grazing, are found on the higher ridges and points. The
log cabin was also situated in an expected location, in a canyon bottom
with available water and trees for construction materials.
•

10
