The dominat grass is bluebunch wheatgrass, Agropyron
spicatum. Other grasses present include: slender wheat-
grass; Indian ricegrass, Cryzopsis hymenoides; cheatgrass,
• Bromua tectorum; and bluegrass, Poa app. A sedge, Carex
ap., was sparsely represented under the oak. Forbs
present include: little sunflower, SeZiantheZla uniflora;
sulfurflower; and yarrow.
2.6 Wet Meadow Community
The alluvial soils along Hayden Gulch that have a
high water table are dominated by a community composed
of sedge, Carex spp.; shrubby willows, Salix spp.; cattail,
Typha sp.; and several species of grasses and fo_rbs adapted
to moist habitats.
3.0 Endangered and Threatened Species
William Weber, Curator of the Herbarium, University
of Colorado, verified the identity of all vascular plants
collected on the study site and adjacent areas, These
plants have been preserved in a reference collection.
The majority of plants are identified to~the species
level. The taxonomic characteristics of many plants had
deteriorated due to the late sampling period, and thus,
• could be identified only to the genus level.
None of the plants identified to species appears
on the U.S. Department of Interior's "Endangered and
Threatened Species (Plants)!'* as published in the Federal
Register, Wednesday, June 16, 1976. However, four plants
identified to the genus level (Arabia, Aatragalus, PhaceZia
and Festuca) belong to genera which have one or more species
on the "Endangered and Threatened" list. Further analysis
of the reference collection, review of literature on the
Endangered plants are those species in danger of
extinction throughout all or a significant portion
of their ranges. Existence may be endangered because
of the destruction, drastic modifications, or severe
curtailment of habitat, or because of overexploitation,
disease, predation, or even unkown reasons. Plant
groups from very limited areas, e.g., the type
localities only, or from restricted fragile habitats
usually are considered endangered.
Threatened plants are those species likely to become
endangered within the foreseeable future throughout
all or a.significant portion of their ranges. This
includes species categorized as rare, very rare, or
. depleted.
_=13-
